![]() Then the band got serious with Everyday Life, on which they tackled racial profiling, gun violence, war orphans and all kinds of things that make modern life so fun. A Head Full of Dreams appeared the following year and Coldplay gave in to bright, shiny and frivolous Top 40 sounds. ![]() The glum heartache album Ghost Stories also suffered from having too many cooks in the kitchen while also making the stew far less flavorful. Mylo Xyloto, a concept album about graffiti art or something along those lines, saw a slew of producers getting their fingerprints all over the final mix. Brian Eno came to their rescue for the following sessions, helping the band to consolidate their strengths for the somewhat-different-but-not-too-out-there Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends. Their 2000 full-length debut Parachutes was a solid start with enough post-Britpop hit singles to make it an international bestseller, and their second album A Rush of Blood to the Head deepened their sound and widened their fanbase even more, but by the time 2005’s X&Y rolled around, even casual fans could see that the pressure was starting to get to the young band. Then again, the trajectory of Coldplay’s career hasn’t been a clean, straight line lately. Twitter seemed aglow with piqued interest “Is Coldplay going prog?” “Is this their new direction?” With the arrival of Music of the Spheres, it’s clear that “Coloratura” was a red herring. “ Poets prophesy up in the blue / Together, that’s how we’ll make it through” he gently exhales as the coda repeats the pattern of the introduction, only in reverse. ![]() “ Pluribus unum, unus mundus!” calls out Martin, as if we can all follow along with the “story” at hand. Beginning with a swirling piano and harp introduction that lasts close to two minutes, singer Chris Martin enters the song, softly singing about a solar system evolving “ Through Voyager, Callisto, Calliope / Betelgeuse, the neon moons.” After a lullaby interlude, the band that breaks out into a toe-tapping ⅝ shuffle that’s soon overtaken by a sky-wide Floydian slip where guitarist Jonny Buckland plays the melody with a slide. This wasn’t one of those three-minute ideas that was stretched out to be three times as long through sheer repetition, there were actually numerous ideas at play. Coldplay released the 10-minute song “Coloratura” in the summer of 2021 and people seemed genuinely excited about it. ![]()
